Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. As a young infant, Ford struggled with obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused through word-related associations. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teen years, and joined National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her repertoire in 1996.
